Quick thought for the day about Apartheid nostalgia.

You sometimes get the idea that some white South Africans think the country would be better if we still had Apartheid. Well not to get into any of the usual race crap, here are a few things that would be different if Apartheid never ended.

1) We would not be allowed to use the internet perhaps for anything but a few verkrampte government sanctioned sites, if at all.
2) We would not be allowed to have new technology mobile phones. Or perhaps for security reasons even any mobile phones.
3) No DSTV , or perhaps even MNET.
4) Which wouldn't make much of a difference because we wouldn't be allowed to watch anything rated more than "A" or with slight political undertones and there'd be no international sport for us anyway.
5) No travel abroad.
6) And for all the above reason swe'd fall extremely behind in our competitiveness as a nation.
7 ) Little to no foriegn investment, or tourists adding to the collapse of our economy.
8) We'd have to go to the fucking army and defend ourselves against countries like Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Angola that are actually getting their shit together.

I could honestly go on forever, but you don't need to really go any further to get the picture.

The end result of not ending apartheid when you basically think of it is this :

ZIM2.0

So next time you're feeling a little nostalgic for apartheid and bitching about the country on the internet. Stop to think about the irony for a second.

Last thought.

If you're living abroad and life is so wonderful. Why feel nostalgia for Apartheid ? And what's more, why hate the black people whose government made it possible for you to leave the country ? Could it be you're far more miserable than you might admit ?

Ok, I'll bite. And not that I'm an apartheid 2.0 advocate but, oh, hang on. Isn't that sort of what we have now - discrimination based solely on skin colour - Apartheid 2.0? Regardless:

1.) There WAS no internet so to speak prior to '94 so there's no way for you to back up this ludicrous claim. Did we have telephones prior to '94? Yes? This allowed for the most cutting-edge international communication at the time and yet there we were living in our evil little empire and censored to the hilt with, you got it, the ability to communicate with anyone and everyone across the globe. Well then that's reason enough to believe that we would in fact have access to the internet had things continued on that path. Sure, we probably wouldn't be the most popular chatroom candidates but seriously, come on.

2.) We would not be allowed to have new tech mobile phones? LOL. Again, follow the logic in the previous point and see why I beg to differ. We had TV, we had radio and we had all the other bells and whistles the rest of the world had so why the bleedin' hell would we not have mobile fucking phones?! Or are you saying the government would only allow us to have 3310s and Tedelex tape decks in our cars? Straw grasping there, ol' cock. For what reason would tech evolution cease to exist and not serve the modern consumer in this hypothetical situation?

3.)No DSTV or perhaps even MNET? Well this just PROVES you to be full of fowl faeces you bloody beaked buffoon. MNET, I think you'll find, WAS already around during apartheid. I know you probably weren't even a vague hint of a sparkle in your feathered father's eyes at the time and so wouldn't have the foggiest. But here, have a wee gander at thee ol' wiki for some insight - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-Net
DSTV? Do we even need to go there?

4.) Conservative as the old regime may have been, we could and we did watch whatever we wanted by going to the video store. Again, cutting edge stuff back in the day and it may be hard to believe but video shops weren't as illegal as say, whites trying to buy shares in Vodacom in South Africa today (heaven forbid!). Oh no, they were very much allowed. As for international sport - well, maybe you've got a point on that one but since we're being hypothetical here, let's consider the fact that maybe, by some miracle, the world would see our neighbour to the north treating its own people as well as whites and anyone else like absolute dirt and would consider our situation as being not so bad; in turn allowing us to muck in on the sports field. Haha! Sorry, I'm not sure if you could tell but that was only a joke. Everyone knows that had the old regime still been in place, the SADF would've marched up and sent that sad sack of black shit known as Robber Mugarbage to his horned maker on week 1 of him throwing his weight around! Yes, sure we would've been hated for it! I'm not denying that! That much is obvious. It's the principle that counts! ;)

5.) No travel abroad. Oh my. Do I really need to reply to this one? I think you'll find that many of us travelled abroad during apartheid, motherclucker. Why would we not do it now?

6.)See above. Anyway, we were VERY competitive as a nation back then. We had to be. The world hated us and we had to innovate and by the power of a G5, innovate we did!

7.)Ah, the foreign investment thang. Yes, finally! On this point I cannot argue. I do find it funny though that with all your 44% down here and 650% up there "facts" that you repeatedly try to shove down everyone's throat, it is because of this point alone that the economy received the boost it did back when the country was handed over; and it was HANDED over. Something you always seem to neglect to mention or acknowledge is that foreign investment was bound to come flooding from the rest of the world when the "evil" whites reliquished power.

There was and it's ever growing usuage became obvious. Do you really think the Apartheid government, who banned music and films, was going to let us be exposed to freedom of speech ? What a joke !

Again follow my logic. What good are modern tech phones if we've never build up internet communications technology ? That Nats let us get tv at the end of the 1970's. And then we had a few crappy government approved chanells massively censored with double speak. It was some red russia shit going on here, and they were welling you the idea they were worried about the communists ? Wake up !

Thanks for the compliment but I fully remember the start of mnet (before that open time). American crap dribbled at us like threes company, and "loving". But it sure was a step up from what the S.A.B.C were showing us. But I'll give you that one. woop dee do ! At the same time the rest of the world were enjoying cable and satelite tv for years already.

Please. We couldn't have sustained an army. Already the funds were running dry and we were being outdone in many areas including air dominance and were shit out of friends. We'd have been crushed if we tried to keep up a militant tactic. There'd be no white South Africans to speak of.

Firstly we had no choice. We were fucked. It would have been weeks before the illusion of power crumbled. Go visit the Apartheid museum and revisit some of the news footage of the time. The country was up in smoke and we had no control. We didn't give fuck all away. We practically whimpered away from power begging not to be killed. We had no bargaining power. By the gace of the A.N.C there has been no brutal vengeance like most predicted.

And I have many times said that white had the oppotunity to show we were best suited to rule this country. But what did we do ? We fucking denied people human rights, and education, electricity and modern convenience, jobs etc. You look like and idiot to propose we are the best canidates for the job. Look at what we did last time ? Greedy fucks !
