Stat slap down 4

Just 2 new stat slaps downs for you today to keep you on your toes.

Ride versus Homocide.

Previously in the link below I demonstrated here how people in europe are twice more likely to die driving to the airport than to die as a tourist in South Africa.

http://killallwhitey.blogspot.com/2008/07/more-statistics-to-shut-you-up.html

But let's bring the driving comparisson home a little bit.

36 out of 100 000 people are killed in car accidents in South Africa every year. Let's be very generous and guess that at most around 10% of South Africans own cars . So to get that figure to represent reality it means your chances of being killed in a car crash as a regular driver are about 360 out 100 000. This means you've got a 10 times higher chance of dying in a car crash today than you have of being murdered. Once again , if your fear of being murdered was indeed rational and well balanced , then you'd better not even think of going near a car. Now if we are really strict about the statistics we should factor in the people that own cars are the middle classes , who are the lowest risk murder group. For whites the figure is as low as 8 out of 100 000 people. That makes you around 40 times more likely to die in a car crash. Hmmmmm.

Murder Burgers.

a) The likeyhood of dying from being murdered in South Africa.
b) The likeyhood of dying from eating an American fast food diet.

In the first case we have a 38 in 100 000 chance. In the second case a 776 in 100 000 chance (I was surprised to find out South African obesity rates equal that of the United States ....so much for the "starving masses" S.A.S..... and those are the American statistics). Simple stated you've got a 20 times higher chance of dying young from obesesity than murder. I don't know if this says more about our junk food eating habits or crime rate , but it's interesting none the less.
So don't forget to let your mates know down at the pub.

Missed the point by a country mile. Only a tiny proportion of people will die in a car crash. We all except this and get on with our lives. We don't write blogs and have fits and go totally "bos" about it. We still dirve our cars everyday as we realise it's a perfectly acceptible risk. Then consider that your 40 less likely to be murdered....and it really is hard to understand the mindset of the people who can talk about nothing else (with the exception of people whose families have been actual victims.)You stand a chance of both happening anywhere you live by the way. Statistically ever so slightly more , but in reality we're talking about the difference between "slim to nothing" and ...well...."slim to nothing."

More gobbledygook. Who is "we"? Are you royalty or Schizophrenic?
Rather consider that you/"we" are more likely to be murdered in a crime-ridden country than in a country where the crime rate is "slim to nothing". Bring on the BigMac... my executioner... to kill me softly.

The difference between muder rates in SA and other countries is that in SA the governmunt don't give a shite about it.

Sure there are murders in Australia / New Zealand / Britian / US - but there the criminal is far less likely to get away with it.

Every noticed how the police only kick into gear when the premiers house is robbed or a high profile person who could affect toursim (David Rattray) get murdered? The police are useless and just don't give a toss about crime - more busy shopping in state vehicles and taking bribes. I mean the head honcho is a fucking crook!

So my chicken friend - do some of your amazing research on the relative conviction rates of violent criminals in other countries and lets have this. I could do this myslef of course but I don't really give a shite becuase my family and I will shortly be leaving these shores for Australia - a place where kids can walk in the street and ride bicycles to school in safety.

Good riddance. Certainyl you won't make a dent in the brain drain figures.

Heya. Got it from freeblogskins.blogspot.com

I agree - I won't make a dent on my own. No-one will. But electrical engineers like me (you know - the guys who prevent everyday inconveniences like load shedding) are leaving in droves so collectively we most certainly will make a huge dent.

I don't expect a doos like you to understand basics - but in my line of work (the electrical systems which keep the wheels of industry turning, our food cooked and our homes lit) I can tell you that the systems are in a very poor state of repair and maintenance. Load shedding is a drop in the ocean compared to what is comming. Why - guys like me that have left in droves.

Sp perhaps you're correct - I won't make a dent in the brain drain. But thousands like me certainly will. Then you'll have no PC to write your drivel on so at least there is some comfort for those that stay.

Yeah matey... you stay and keep the literacy count up with the rest of them!

hahahahahah load shedding ? That's so April ....catch up buddy! There are no electrical problems in South African anymore. And we still have the cheapest power in the world. Is that a tear I see rolling down your cheek ?

++++++++++++

OK I've caught up now. I unreservedly appoligise for assuming that an electrical engineer of 18 yrs expereince on high voltage transmission and distribution networks knows more about the state of affairs of our electricla networks than the walking encyclopedia known as The Rooster.

Shall I post some pictures?

Go ahead. If the biggest issue you can find wityh south Africa is it's electrical grid..then i must say South Africa is even more perfect than I ever imagined. Get real man....there have been no power issues for months now , and that's through winter.

i'm blown away by your sheer cunning.

Isn't the difference in the fact you don't have a choice when getting murdered, but your diet killing you is pretty much your own fault?

If you're going to make comparisons, stop being so trivial in your examples. You're making yourself look incredibly juvenile and unintelligent.

Always well thought and presented in a sophisticated manner, Koos. You're a real winner my son.

The Rooster said...

hi , we're talking about the odds of something happening. It does put things into perspective.

The Rooster said...

To put it another way you'll liekly know 40 people who die in car crashes before you know one person murdered. Or 20 people who die from obesity.

The Rooster said...

Those are the odds. That's not saying murders don't happen..of course they do. And the people who know someone that happens to are of course the most likely to take interest in these issues and shout blue murder. You'd just have to be extremely (EXTREMELY) unlucky for it to happen to you and that remains a fact. And it could happen anywhere.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics...

Rooster dude, I does appreciate what you are doing here with this blog thing on the interanets but seriously, you are using a terrible data point.

"Children are hit particularly hard, as are pedestrians who account for almost half of all the road deaths in South Africa. A child in South Africa is 26 times more likely to die on the roads than a child in the European Union."

Norway: 8.7 deaths per 100,000 people

Finland: 8.6 deaths per 100,000 people

Switzerland: 8.6 deaths per 100,000 people

Bear in mind they even deal with snow and ice on their roads.

Now, justify that, then come back and justify measuring our murder vs crime rate, not to mention other debilitating crimes like rape and shit.

Now, go ahead and say funny shit but don't be surprised when people call you out on your straw man argument.
