This kind of bullshit attitude is totally unwarranted. There aren't many jewellery designers or manufacturers in SA so that's an unexploited market Saffricans can get into instead of exporting unbeneficiated gold and platinum to India, China and Europe to be designed there.
I buy my own gold at wholesale prices instead of at the rip off prices that local jewellers charge. Most jewellers then have the cheek to try to charge the normal mark up for gold on top of the price of the design work!
Local jewellery design has been pretty boring due to lack of competition. Too many designers come up with, "I can't do that", or "I'll make a mould from a similar design and use that" when they know quite well that you lose definition that way.
I hope this man's daughter overcomes racist obstacles and succeeds as a jewellery designer. She'll make a lot of money if she does - Africans are good designers.
