Quick little plug.

Good service and value deserves reward. I just moved ADSL providers to these guys.

Still too much compared to other countries but I can live with 29rand per gig for now. Far cheaper than Telkom anyway. I set it up in around 5 minutes too all online. Their support was very helpful and quick to answer their phones unlike cough....telkom. Check them out. If enough people move from Telkom it will force them to bring down their rates and push us closer to high speed uncapped bandwith at a affordable price so I can pirate movies and music to my hearts content. And besides I really miss my online Company of heroes and team fortress 2.

These Afrihost guys still rely on Telkom lines. They're cheaper but when your line goes down you're still stuck with Telkom.

Cheaper rates are a lot better than nothing of course, but they must have negotiated those from Telkom?

Doubt that. Telkom would never encourage competition. I hire my line from telkom sure , but I still pay more for 3 gigs from them than i'm paying for 10 from afrihost. Great company and will quickly shake up the adsl providers to stop ripping us off like they have been doing.

Well at that price it's certainly worth a try. Even when your Telkom line goes down for a month or so every year. You can't download much with a 3g cap on hsdpa.

My Telkom asdl line was down for two months last year so I decided to just forget it. Copper cable lines are fast becoming history but installing fibre optic lines takes a lot of time and money. The cap on hsdpa is 2GB for R450 a month. Not cheap.

But what you CAN do - from November onwards, if Telkom are to be believed - is buy HSDPA prepaid time from them which you can use in an emergency. See http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Broadband/7543.html. Outrageously expensive of course but still cheaper than Vodacom and MTN when your line goes down.

You still have to pay the outlay for the modem of course.

If you come up with better prices for modems and prepaid HSDPA rates, Rooster, please let us know.

Oh, for the record, when I went to a Telkom service centre a while ago the guy behind the counter kept telling me my adsl would be fine in no time at all. He eventually admitted that his own adsl was down for a month and there was zip he could do about it as he only works there.

It's called Local loop unbundling. Afrihost set up their kit at the exchange and redirect the copper line from your house into in.

FUUUUUUCK TELCOM!!!!!!!!!
