Excuse me while I blame apartheid.

Many white people see no just cause in blacks blaming apartheid for anything. It ended almost 14 years already; get over it already, they say. Often it is said with indignation, if not irritation, as though to say, how dare they!

Those who insist we stop talking about it tell us it’s in the past, so we should forget about it. Perhaps it would be easy to forget if we didn’t bear the scars of the past. For some it’s not mere scars; some walk around with deep sores that are still healing — slowly. Every now and then, the sore is disturbed and the healing process is reversed.

It is easy for the “perpetrator” (I use that word liberally here) to say: “Forget about it,” because he does not want to be reminded of his sins. At the same time it is also too easy for the victim to keep playing the victim card instead of getting on with it. There is a middle ground somewhere between these conflicting feelings.

When we blame the legacy of apartheid, most white people take it as a personal attack on them for having benefited from the system. Or they accuse blacks of refusing to take responsibility for whatever is going wrong in the country. This is not the case. It is an attack on the system. We are not asking you to feel guilty. If anyone needs to get over anything, it is white people who walk around carrying guilt. This guilt might paralyse them, or even make them unwitting racists. Or, even worse, cause them to overcompensate, thus wiping away any sincerity in their efforts to balance the past.

To be honest, had I been white during the height of apartheid I don’t know if I would have had the moral fortitude to stand up against the National Party government. Perhaps I would have condemned it in the comfort and privacy of my mind.

The legacy of apartheid is very real. Let us not pretend that people don’t have a legitimate reason for blaming it for their current condition, as some excuse for their lack of progress. It is an undeniable fact that the vast majority of black people were denied a good education; some were even denied an education. The government of the day did not bother to build schools for them.

Where there is education, opportunity soon follows, and without it blacks were caught in a vicious cycle of stagnation. They saw no real progress for themselves. Instead of passing on wealth from generation to generation, their descendents inherited poverty and a very visible reality that they were not allowed to prosper in the land of their birth.

To dismiss these realities as mere laziness on the part of the black person is a clear lack of understanding of the position the formerly oppressed find themselves in today. The black person is still playing catch up.

We in the black community are lacking decent education, even with the new government. The teachers who teach most black students did not get a fantastic education themselves. With these steep hills to climb, it is a miracle that so many children who went through those schools have managed to extricate themselves from the web of hopelessness.

Jobless blacks in the townships and in the rural areas do not expect the government to do anything for them. What they want are opportunities so that they can improve their lives — not handouts. Many of them don’t see these opportunities, so they create some for themselves even in the bleak conditions in which find themselves. Young men create car-wash businesses and young women hair saloons, to name just the most obvious examples.

On the other hand, blacks look at white misbehaviour through the prism of race without seeing the core of the problem. When we only look at it that way, we don’t try to solve the issue.
The black community must not confuse with racism the young white man’s anger. He cannot understand why he has to be at the back of the queue when he seeks employment. Let’s say that he is too young even to remember apartheid. Shall we now punish him for benefiting from a system that was not of his choosing? Is it his fault that he just happened to have been born into it? Whether he would have grown up to be a perpetrator of the evils of the previous system or not is immaterial. What matters is that the system ended before he could be a conscious and active participant in it. What do we do now?

Having said all I have, I would like to point out that I am not as naive as to believe that racism does not exist. Sadly it is does. We saw manifestations of it recently at the University of the Free State.

Whether we admit it or not, we are all victims of apartheid. But we cannot be victims forever. We may have been victims, but we don’t have to think and act like them. The only way we can raise above it is when we first seek to understand. However, this must not excuse bad black or white behaviour.

Well balanced article... for a scary moment I thought the chicken man had started to look at things from a balanced perspective... but alas, it was not to be...
Anyway... I think that both sides of this racial divide need to stop whinging & whining, shut the f*uck up and get on with building a better nation... If it can work anywhere then South Africa is the place...
Remember the JFK speech..."ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country"
JUST GET ON WITH IT SA!!!

Oh I think we agree on that. A lot more shutting up and getting on with it in the best (read :positive) way possible...and a lot less playing the victim and spitting the dummy.

You were trying to shove Afrikaans, Jan Van Riebek and Simon Van Der Stel down our throats. Do you know how absurd and inslting that is ?

The Rooster said...

Jan Van Riebek invented the computer and fought for the liberty of black people ? Shit , I don't remember that part.

We all know that there was no civilization in Africa back in those days. (Well not even today for that matter)
With the White Westeners came civilization and technology.

No use trying to debate with you, as you argue like a fucking toddler.

And to add to my comment of schools being torched by black students, it seems that the torching culture is still deeply rooted in the black gene.
I just saw on the 24 website that the protesters at Orange Farm torched their own shacks.

Fucking hilarious!

And when white people were still in caves and the chinese had a rudimentary printing press and rocket technology. The Egyptians had built the pyramins and the they were plotting the stars in South America. What's your point again ? Subsaharan africa was behind (slightly) because of being geographically seperated from the rest of the world by the saharan dessert you fucking ignorant knobhead.

Jan van Riebeeck fathered the whole Cape coloured community and invented the Ossewa and some crappy instant coffee. Simon Van Der Stel invented expensive wines and frilly shirts for men. Both had a significant impact on SA.

I found a blog similar to this one and SAS, but more believable:

I think it would be fair to say that you can blame apartheid for some of the things that are wrong, some of the time, BUT you cannot blame apartheid for all the things that are wrong all of the time.

And it is definitely those that always fall back on the latter for their shortcomings that get up my nose.

Your nose must be filled to capacity

You can't tell the difference between a spelling error and typo ? Idiot.

Actually what lies most of the corruption and sinsiter governments in africa have been the trading agenda's of white people. Only a child would dispute that. So called "loans" made to dictaters in the name of "aid" ..the money coming from big banking and put into the hands of puppets , exhchanged for unfair trade agreements is what screwed africa up for many years. The work of white men.

Anyway , anyone with their ear on the tracks knows that currenly africa is enjoying excellent economic growth and pulling itself out of a slump. Read the previous article and school yourself.

And no , only subsaharan africa was behind. Egypt was far ahead of the west. The west rise to prominance only really took flight with the industrial revolution/Enlightenment. It's historically speaking just about brand new. It says nothing about the racial potential of people who got their first....it's purely random and based on the favourable enviornmental conditions and luck.

And South Afican whites use the contributions of western countries to try and convince themselves it was any of their doing. Most of you racist twats are afrikaaners. Now I'm not saying black people are better than anyone else , but sure as hell not worse than Afrikaaners. An uneducated , ignorant people caught up in a 16th century dogmatic mindset.

And there are perfectly many many many black people who simply have nothing to apologise for. Smart , educated , sucessful contributers to society who certainly son't have to answer to you and your ignorant view of the world.

A few days ago, the Nobel Laureate, Dr James Watson, made a remark that
is now generating worldwide uproar, especially among the blacks.
He said what to me looks like a self-evident truth. He told The Sunday
Times of London in an interview that in his humble opinion, black people
are less intelligent than the White people.

Since then, some of us cannot hear anything else but the outrage of
black people who feel demeaned by what Watson has said. So many people
have called the man names. To be expected, some have said he is a
racist. Some even wonder how a "foolish" man like Watson could have won
the Nobel Prize. Even white people who, deep in their heart, agree with
Watson want to be politically, correct so they condemn the man.
Why are we blacks becoming so reactive, so sensitive to any remarks, no
matter how well-meaning, about our failure as a race?
I do not know what constitutes intelligence. I leave that
to our so-called scholars. But I do know that in terms of organising
society for the benefit of the people living in it, we blacks have not
shown any intelligence in that direction at all. I am so ashamed of this
and sometimes feel that I ought to have belonged to another race.
Nigeria my dear country is a prime example of the inferiority of the
black race when compared to other races. Let somebody please tell me
whether it is a manifestation of intelligence if a people cannot
organise a free, fair and credible election to choose who will lead
them. Is it intelligence that we cannot provide simple pipe-borne water
for the people? Our public school system has virtually collapsed. Is
that a sign of intelligence? Our roads are impassable. In spite of the
numerous sources that nature has made available to us to tap for energy
to run our industries and homes, we have no steady supply of
electricity. Yet electricity is the bedrock of industrialisation. When
you agree with the school of Watson , some say you are incorrect because
all these failures are a result of poor leadership. Why must it be us
blacks who must always suffer poor leadership? Is that not a
manifestation of unintelligence?
In the name of international trade, bilateral co-operation,
globalisation and other subterfuges, the norm in the world today is for
smart people to appropriate the wealth of other people for themselves
and their countries. But more among the blacks than any other race, the
practice is to steal from their own country and salt away to other
people's country. Is it intelligence that our leaders steal billions of
naira and hide in other people's country?
Anywhere in the world today where you have a concentration of black
people among other races, the poorest, the least educated, the least
achieving, and the most violent group among those races will be the
blacks. When indices of underdevelopment are given, black people and
countries are sure to occupy the bottom of the ladder. If we are
intelligent, why do we not carry first when statistics of development
are given?
Look at the African continent. South Africa is the most developed
country because of the presence of whites there. This may be an
uncomfortable truth for many of us but it exists nevertheless. If the
whites had been driven away after independence, we would have seen a
steady decline of that country.

Well, the first heart transplant was done by a white Afrikaner. Google it if you don't believe me.

White South Africans have invented several items that are being used around the world today.

A simple example, the Kreepy Krauly. If I'm not mistaken, a dude from Springs in the East Rand.
What have black South Africans ever invent?

you agree with the school of Watson , some say you are incorrect because
all these failures are a result of poor leadership.

Why must it be us

Africa : Open for business

NAIROBI -- To a growing number of foreign investors, sub-Saharan Africa represents much more than the ethnic clashes, coups, bouts of genocide and natural disasters that have scarred many countries in the region. It represents dazzling opportunities to make money.

"If you look at sub-Saharan African markets, they've given annual returns that are substantially better than most around the world," said Ayo Salami, a chief investment officer for Duet, a London-based financial group that inaugurated its first Africa fund in December. "Even this year, most of the economies around the world are not seeing very much growth -- 2 percent would look optimistic. Whereas in Africa, it's been around 6 percent for years. One of the fastest-growing economies in the world is actually Angola, yet the perception is that it's still in a state of war."

"You don't usually hear these stories," Salami added, "but there are signs that Africa is moving on."

Foreign investment is pouring into the continent at unprecedented rates, doubling in recent years to around $39 billion, according to U.N. figures. In recent months, some investors have even appeared convinced that Africa might be a safer spot to sink their money than the shakier U.S. and European markets.

If "People are looking for diversification," said Hurley Doddy, chief operating officer of Emerging Capital Partners, a private equity group based in Washington whose investments in Africa have jumped from $400 million in 2000 to $1.5 billion this year. "A lot of the problems the U.S. economy is having, you simply do not have that in Africa."

Middle Eastern firms flush with oil money are increasingly looking to neighboring Africa, as are investors searching for the next India.

While the largest chunk of money is flowing to the continent's most developed countries, such as South Africa and Tunisia, a growing percentage is heading to sub-Saharan nations, including Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Botswana and Cameroon. Tourism and mining have benefited, but so have cellphone companies, soap manufacturers, coffee growers, banks, construction firms and other businesses more often funded by donor money.

Stock exchanges have also prospered. Where once there were five, there are now 18 exchanges across Africa -- tiny markets in such relatively stable, out-of-the-news countries as Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia, where annual returns have averaged nearly 15 percent since 2000 and have at times been as high as 144 percent in a given year, according to a report by the International Monetary Fund.

Rwanda, infamous for the 1994 genocide that killed nearly 1 million people, is now gaining a reputation as one of the most business-friendly countries in the region, with smoothly paved roads and wireless Internet access. The Middle Eastern firm Dubai World recently said it planned to invest $230 million in Rwanda's tourism sector.

"People are starting to see Africa much more as the land of opportunity than in the traditional paradigm of starvation and famine and war," said Alan McCormick, managing director of the Dubai-based investment group Legatum. "There are opportunities in a number of countries -- it's not universal, but it's there."

While the region has monumental deterrents to business -- including generally horrendous roads, spotty power supplies and entrenched corruption -- analysts say the surge in foreign investment reflects a number of fundamental economic changes.

Chinese investment across the continent -- in oil, agriculture, mines, roads, power and other areas -- has to some degree caused private investors to sit up and take notice, Salami said. But so have reforms undertaken by governments.

Stat slap down 4

Just 2 new stat slaps downs for you today to keep you on your toes.

Ride versus Homocide.

Previously in the link below I demonstrated here how people in europe are twice more likely to die driving to the airport than to die as a tourist in South Africa.

http://killallwhitey.blogspot.com/2008/07/more-statistics-to-shut-you-up.html

But let's bring the driving comparisson home a little bit.

36 out of 100 000 people are killed in car accidents in South Africa every year. Let's be very generous and guess that at most around 10% of South Africans own cars . So to get that figure to represent reality it means your chances of being killed in a car crash as a regular driver are about 360 out 100 000. This means you've got a 10 times higher chance of dying in a car crash today than you have of being murdered. Once again , if your fear of being murdered was indeed rational and well balanced , then you'd better not even think of going near a car. Now if we are really strict about the statistics we should factor in the people that own cars are the middle classes , who are the lowest risk murder group. For whites the figure is as low as 8 out of 100 000 people. That makes you around 40 times more likely to die in a car crash. Hmmmmm.

Murder Burgers.

a) The likeyhood of dying from being murdered in South Africa.
b) The likeyhood of dying from eating an American fast food diet.

In the first case we have a 38 in 100 000 chance. In the second case a 776 in 100 000 chance (I was surprised to find out South African obesity rates equal that of the United States ....so much for the "starving masses" S.A.S..... and those are the American statistics). Simple stated you've got a 20 times higher chance of dying young from obesesity than murder. I don't know if this says more about our junk food eating habits or crime rate , but it's interesting none the less.
So don't forget to let your mates know down at the pub.
